Back to United Fund starting line

bporterfield@pvdemocrat.com — With a new year it’s back to the starting line for volunteers with the Pauls Valley United Fund as they get a new push underway to raise money.

For this week the theme of a board meeting was to come up with ideas on possible events that could help with the fundraising efforts throughout the 2014 year.

The one brand new to the UF line-up is a “father-daughter” dance that should become a reality next month.

As new board member Brian Black described his idea and past dances he’s attended with his own daughter, it was quickly decided to schedule it as a kind of Valentine’s event in February with proceeds going to the local United Fund.

“I think it’s a great idea,” said Megan Drannon, also a new United Fund board member. “I definitely think it’s worth pursuing.”

“Doing something like that will definitely create memories,” said Alecia Weatherford about the dance idea.

For now the dance, complete with a DJ, is expected to come on the night of Saturday, Feb. 22 at the Reynolds Recreation Center.

More information about the dance event is expected to be sent to schools throughout Garvin County.

Chairman Angela Portwood said all United Fund board members are hoping to organize more fundraising events this year.

“We want to increase the events we have and spread them out through the year,” Portwood said.

“We just hope we can increase participation in these events,” she said. “We’ll see how they’re received.

“A pancake breakfast in April could be our spring thing.”

Ideas for events are very much needed as the board begins the work of trying to meet its goal of raising at least $40,000 this year.

That budget total has dropped the last couple years, which naturally impacts the overall amount of money available for distribution to community based organizations in Pauls Valley and in some cases entities having an impact throughout the county.

With less money available for the year board members have said they will be first looking at distributing money to things like food pantries, efforts involving children and community assistance programs.

  • ‘Rio 2’ average effort, but still a family win

Though Hollywood will never truly abandon milking characters for franchises well past the expiration date, I will say that even the most mediocre series seems to be getting at least more tolerable than in the past.
