Resident thrilled to blend recycling with art

emann@pvdemocrat.com — For those uncertain about entering the Pauls Valley Arts Council Trashformation Art Show, one participant has a few encouraging words.

No matter how many times area resident Susie Agee has created one of her paintings or entered a piece in a show, she doesn’t look at it as a competition against other artists. She thinks everyone has the ability to create and it is all the better that it can be as simple as reusing ordinarily throw-away objects one has around the home,

“I’m so glad we have art things going on in Pauls Valley,” said Agee. “Whenever people talk to me they say ‘I’m not Artistic,’ but I think they are.”

Agee said creating art for her is finding a way to convey a certain emotion. She hopes to capture this using items she has stored up in her garage and would not be normally accepted at the towns recycling drop off location at 505 South Walnut.

“You can build something with trash that makes someone happy, mad, laugh or cry,” said Agee, who is reusing objects like plastic bottle caps and picture frames. “You share them by making art out of it.”

Agee also believes even though she has a background in painting and has participated in other arts council events that anyone who might be interested just needs to create something that is beautiful to them first and then go from there.

“The way I look at it is you recognize things that you think can be beautiful, said Agee. “That’s what makes art more enjoyable than winning a prize.”

It’s convenient for Agee that she’s able to combine her love of art and what she feels is a responsibility to the town’s environment, by reducing impact on the landfill. In her spare time she is also on the town’s recycling committee and said the drop off location has now made it to where she makes more trips there than to the dumpster.
