A challenge with a special ride

bporterfield@pvdemocrat.com — The challenge is on for a center in Pauls Valley hoping to meet a fundraising goal meant to help their special clients.

The next few weeks are big for the Garvin County Community Living Center (GCCLC) as officials there work to raise the money needed to match a grant that if acquired will be a big help with client transportation.

Even more specifically, the $20,000 matching grant challenge would help the center with transportation for new clients coming from the local Southern Oklahoma Resource Center.

Leading the charge is Lisa Driskill, whose many duties at the GCCLC include working as the transition coordinator.

“We need $20,000 in cash or in-kind to match the grant,” Driskill said.

“The challenge is to raise $20,000 so it’s matched and it becomes $40,000,” she said.

“This is a vehicle grant that would be used to help us purchase vehicles we need.”

This kind of help looks to be needed even more these days with the ongoing transition of residents out of SORC, set for closure at some point in the future, and into a community based situation.

Some of those SORC residents are making the transition through the Living Center.

A few will need a wheelchair accessible van, while others simply need a car for transportation to places like a doctor’s office.

According to Driskill, the Living Center has accepted five residents transitioned so far with another seven expected in May and three others not far behind.

Those individuals are moved into Living Center housing and take jobs at the local facility.

Monies from this challenge grant could allow the center to get four vehicles to meet any client transportation needs.

The grant offer is coming from the Carl C. Anderson Sr. and Marie Jo Anderson Charitable Foundation of Austin, Texas.

“They invited us to participate in this $20,000 challenge,” Driskill said, adding the challenge goes through the end of May.

If the $20,000 goal is met it will be matched by the Texas foundation that works with children, families and people with disabilities, she said.

With the fundraising challenge underway officials at the GCCLC are now talking to area auto dealerships and other “generous donors.”

The donations can be money or even items like vehicles as their value will be calculated into the fundraising total.

Donations can be sent to the Garvin County Community Living Center, P.O. Box 1119, Pauls Valley, OK 73075.

To donate a vehicle or get more information, call Driskill at the Living Center, 405-238-7351.
