Derby cars ready for the track

bporterfield@pvdemocrat.com — Anyone into the racing of those small but familiar Hot Wheels cars, or really just fun in general, should not forget about this weekend’s big event in downtown Pauls Valley.

Now a regular thing in PV led by the local Toy and Action Figure Museum, the annual Hot Wheels Double Dog Dare Derby is moving to the starting lines on Saturday, May 24.

Racers and fun enthusiasts are also reminded the event has a new location.

In the past the racing was done outside on a side street near the museum itself.

This year’s derby will instead be held inside the Pauls Valley Arts and Cultural Center, which is located on the corner of Paul and Walnut streets.

Jodi Wood, who serves as the museum’s director, says there are some who will miss the outside action, but there are some big advantages to holding the event inside.

“This year we’re going to have it inside at the Arts and Cultural Center,” Wood said. “That’s new.

“That way we can have more carnival games and kids can have more fun.”

It also allows the derby event to avoid the windy and sometimes rainy conditions on the big Hot Wheels race day.

For those interested in taking part in the derby, registration is set to begin at 10 a.m.

The Hot Wheels racing action is scheduled to get underway at 11 a.m.

Participants should remember they can use their own Hot Wheels cars but those little cars can’t be modified in any way.

The cost is $6 for the first car and $5 for each additional car.

Plans also include displaying automobile memorabilia, donated by local residents, in the arts center on Saturday.

Another new feature is secondary tracks are expected to be set up so people can play while waiting to race on the main track.

Trophies and race sets are expected to go to the winners in kid and adult divisions.

All derby participants and their families will also receive free admission to the toy museum located only a short distance from the arts center.
