Coloring honor goes to Whitebead

Pauls Valley, Oklahoma — A Whitebead student was among the winners of a statewide coloring and poster contest every year for well site safety.

Emili Reyes claimed second place in the second grade coloring contest as part of The Oklahoma Energy Resources Board’s (OERB) annual “Well Site Safety Day.”

Reyes was among the 21 students in grades K-6 who had the opportunity to share original artwork, illustrating the dangers of playing around well sites, with their state legislators.

Her trip to the state Capitol came on Tuesday, April 22, beginning with a meet and greet with legislators.

An awards ceremony was conducted in the Blue Room as winners like Reyes were able to show their winning work and receive an award.

Afterwards, all attendees were invited to Legacy Hall in the OERB Building for lunch and games.

OERB’s Well Site Safety Coloring Contest was for kindergarten age kids through the second grade, while a Well Site Safety Poster Contest was for third through sixth grade.

The student winners were chosen from a total of 2,648 entries.

The coloring and poster contests are meant to highlight the messages of the OERB’s “Well Sites are DUH-DUH-Dangerous” campaign, which educates young students about the dangers of playing at well sites.

“Children need to understand that well sites are not safe places to hang out or play,” said Mindy Stitt, executive director of the OERB.

“The art contests help us teach students about well site safety in a way that is fun and creative.”
