D.E. Bert Lunsford

Pauls Valley, Oklahoma — D.E. ‘Bert’ Lunsford, 89, of Wynnewood passed away on Father’s Day, June 15, 2014.

Bert was born in Blackburn, Oklahoma to Gail Lunsford and Ora Mabel Williams Lunsford on May 4. 1926.

Bert joined the United States Navy in 1942 and proudly served his country during World War II for four years as a combat aviation machinists mate in the Navy’s PV-1 squadron. As a rear lookout, he was responsible for manning his twin .50 caliber machine guns positioned under the tail of the aircraft.

After serving his country, Bert returned to Oklahoma in 1947. He met and married Norma Jean Eberhart, literally the girl next door to his mother’s house in Shawnee. The couple was married in 1947.

After graduating from college classes at OSU in 1953, Bert began working at Linde Air Products Company, a division of Union Carbide, where he continued to work for 31 years until his retirement as a Senior Regional Engineer in 1983.

Bert had a passion for motorcycles, his first being a 1941 Harley-Davidson, purchased soon after his return from serving in the military. He continued to ride motorcycles, including annual rides with his son on the Talimena Trail and the winding scenic roads of the Ouchita National Forest in Arkansas, until he was 86 years old.

Bert was lovingly cared for by his daughter, Terri, since 2009 in the home they happily shared in Wynnewood. Both of his children, Terri and Bart, were with him when he peacefully passed into Eternity early Sunday morning.

Bert is survived by his daughter, Terri Ann Lunsford of Wynnewood; his son, Bart Lunsford and wife Jeanine of Diamondhead, MS; his grandchildren: Stephanie Hand of Chico, Texas, Travis Lunsford (U.S. Navy) of Groton, CT, and Kayla Lunsford of Houston, Texas; as well as his great-grandchildren: Kaylee and Gracie Lunsford of Davis, Oklahoma, and Taryn and Linny Lunsford of Chico, Texas.

He will be missed by his family and his friends, especially those he would often sit chatting with, swapping stories about the days gone by over a cup of coffee.

Our Dad was a lover of animals, especially dogs. Because there are no immediate plans for a memorial service, in lieu of flowers, any donations made to the Pauls Valley Animal Shelter [300 East Airport Road, Pauls Valley 73075 (405) 238-1303] would be greatly appreciated.

We believe this is what our Dad would have wanted. God bless you and thank you, Bart and Terri Lunsford.
