Hospital honor a real surprise

bporterfield@pvdemocrat.com — Connie Wright had few words but plenty of genuine surprise when she walked into Pauls Valley General Hospital’s cafeteria and learned she was the one being honored.

The casual gathering this week included some familiar faces from the past as Wright was being honored for her 35 years of service given to the local hospital.

“I’m speechless,” Wright said as she was being greeted by a whole host of current and former PVGH employees.

Wright currently works as the bereavement and volunteer coordinator for the hospital’s hospice service.

Over the years she’s put in some time in other places, like the hospital’s pharmacy and the department overseeing supplies.

There were no such calls for duty on June 18 as Wright’s work milestone received a surprise reception, complete with a plaque, one large cake and a few food items that included chocolate covered strawberries.

There were also plenty of smiles and hugs, including a few from Wright’s daughter, Amy Wright.

“I think it’s wonderful all these people are here to honor her,” Amy said. “She done so much for this hospital.”

One local icon getting involved was Dr. Jim Lindsey, a longtime physician in Pauls Valley who’s now retired.

Lindsey provided a few things for the celebration, including a couple of albums filled with photos of days gone by at the hospital.

“I’m just glad to be here for this,” Lindsey said. “She did a lot for this hospital.”

Right in the middle of the planning for the surprise reception was Donna Sharp, a nurse at PVGH who has worked with Wright for some time.

“Thirty five years — we wanted to do something to show our appreciation for her service to this hospital,” Sharp said.

Sharp said it was last week when Wright mentioned her 35th anniversary as an employee at the PV hospital.

“We started talking about it and decided to do something for her.”

The calls started going out as a way to get former employees to attend an event intended to honor Wright.

“There are a lot of past employees who came because they all know Connie,” Sharp said. “They worked with Connie for years. We want to celebrate this with her.

“We’re glad to have her and hope she stays for a few more years.

“She’s definitely well loved. Connie is probably the most positive person I know. She’s a hard worker who does a little of everything for us at the hospital.”
