Sales claim bad for local chamber

bporterfield@pvdemocrat.com — One woman’s sales approach to a number of Pauls Valley businesses this week, including a false claim to be connected to a local group, has brought on a few anxious moments for some.

Maybe the biggest concern of all is the lone salesperson’s claim to be affiliated with the Pauls Valley Chamber of Commerce.

It’s a claim that’s simply not true, said the president of the chamber.

“I received a couple of calls Tuesday about this young lady going around town selling make-up and saying she was from the chamber,” said Sherri Wing.

“She is not with chamber,” she said.

“She was described as being tall with long, brown hair, and I want people to know it wasn’t me.”

What is known is the woman was going to local businesses in an effort to sell make-up.

During the sales pitches the woman apparently was making the false claim to be representing the chamber here.

Another problem is the woman was conducting the sales without first acquiring a local permit from city hall, said Pauls Valley Police Chief Mitch McGill.

“We did receive a report of a lady selling make-up and portraying herself as being affiliated with the chamber,” said McGill, who confirmed the salesperson did not have a permit for the sales.

He did say an officer was able to contact the woman over the phone later Tuesday and inform her a permit is required for anyone to conduct this type of sales in Pauls Valley.

“So far it looks to be legit,” the chief said about the sales campaign.

“Soliciting without a permit is all we know for sure the woman was doing wrong.”

Although this sales campaign might check out OK, Wing said there should always be concerns when any salesperson without a permit goes around town misrepresenting themselves with a false claim.

“My concerns would be someone misrepresenting the chamber and the whole possibility for fraud or any other potential problems,” Wing said.

“If she was collecting people’s personal information and we don’t know how she’s going to use it, that could be a concern.”
