Floyd Leslie Carter

Pauls Valley, Oklahoma — Floyd Leslie Carter believed in Jesus Christ, in caring for the land and in caring for his family.
Born into a farming family in rural Wynnewood, Okla. on September 2, 1937 to Floyd and Bonnie Carter, Floyd spent nearly 77 years living only a mile from his place of birth doing what he loved the most – caring for God’s creatures – the land, the animals who inhabited it, and his own loved ones.
Floyd, who died on July 9, 2014 at 76 years of age, became a champion of hard work and Christian values at a young age when he was relied on for the livelihood of the family farm.
In high school, Floyd was an active member of the Wynnewood football team, the National Guard Unit Marksmen team, and Wynnewood FFA.
Upon his graduation from Wynnewood High School in 1956, Floyd received his American Farmer Degree in 1958 and married his high school sweetheart, Betty Sue Blakely on August 29, 1958. Four daughters were born to this nearly 56 year union - Dena’, Darsha, Cami, and Ammie.
While he farmed and understood the lay of the land for all of his life, his occupation for 38 years was serving as a rural mail carrier. Floyd never thought of it as simply a job, but rather an opportunity for him to better meet his neighbors. He loved his job, loved meeting patrons, and especially loved leaving gum in the mailboxes at the homes of children along his route.
Floyd was a member of the Wynnewood First United Methodist Church, served as a trustee, and enjoyed for many years preparing breakfast with the Fishers of Men each Wednesday morning – and also preparing and serving breakfast for Wynnewood School and sporting activities.
He was also a member of Farm Bureau for 28 years where he served as the Farm Bureau Young People Board President and the Garvin County Farm Bureau Board President.
Additionally, he was a member of the Wynnewood School Board for 25 years, the Garvin County Co-Op Board, the District Rural Mail Carrier Board, the State Water Conservation Committee, the Garvin County Cattlemen’s Association, and even helped with building the present Wynnewood cabin at Falls Creek.
He is survived by his wife Betty Carter of Wynnewood; four daughters: Dena’ Fernberg and husband Brad Fernberg of Oklahoma City, Darsha Huckabaa and husband Tim Huckabaa of Pauls Valley, Cami Matthews of Wynnewood, and Ammie Maltz and husband Michael Maltz of Germantown, Wisconsin; six grandchildren: Ryan Matthews and wife Ashley Matthews of Wynnewood, Brooke Matthews of Wynnewood, Lauren Pagett and husband Riley Pagett of Washington, D.C., Whittni Huckabaa of Pauls Valley, and Maecie Maltz and Carter Maltz of Germantown, Wisconsin; one great grandchild, Case Matthews, also of Wynnewood; and one sister, Lalia Jolly and husband Ray of Wynnewood.
Floyd was preceded in death by his parents Floyd and Bonnie Carter and his grandparents Otto and Lela Carter.
Floyd’s life was a wonderful reflection of his love for Jesus. He had the ability to make anyone he spoke with feel welcomed and respected. His humor and love for life were a joy to all who knew him.
Services to celebrate his life will be Saturday, July 12, 2014 at 10 a.m. at the Wynnewood First United Methodist Church with Dr. Joe Elam officiating.
Burial will be in the Oaklawn Cemetery in Wynnewood, Okla., under the direction of the DeArman Funeral Home. Please  send online condolences to
