Water park looks to skies — The first full swim season ever for Pauls Valley's still new water park is now only hours away — maybe.

Open for just a few short weeks last year, the new park operated in conjunction with the Reynolds Recreation Center is scheduled to open its gates for the summer on Saturday, May 24.

That might be a big if, depending on ever changing weather forecasts predicting the possibility of rain storms on the pool’s opening day.

Regardless of what happens with the weather, Pauls Valley’s director of parks and recreation, Jennifer Samford, says a lot of people are getting prepared for the water park to get the season underway.

“We’re working really hard to get ready,” Samford said.

“We still have got a lot of things to do before now and Saturday.”

One of the staff right in the middle of preparations is new aquatics supervisor Robert Rennie III.

Rennie is among those who’ve been hands-on with the pool cleaning duties as the facility’s systems and pumps are being tested and readied for the opening.

He’s also been working for the past several weeks recruiting enough lifeguards and getting them certified for the job.

The staff as a whole is getting ready, but if Mother Nature doesn’t cooperate the park’s opening day of the season could be pushed back just a bit.

“If it’s storming on Saturday we won’t be open,” Samford said. “If it’s cloudy, windy and rainy it really wouldn’t be worth opening up.

“We’re preparing for Saturday and just time will tell.”

Once the park is open for the season anyone looking to make it a regular stop for the summer should know the facility's regular hours.

It will be open from noon to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, while on Sunday it's from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The cost to swimmers really depends on their age. Rates are:

• Youth 4 to 14 years old, daily fee is $4, a 10-day punch pass is $30.

• Ages 15 to 61, daily fee is $7 or $60 for a 10-day punch pass.

• Senior citizens, daily fee is $5 or $40 for the 10-day punch pass.

• Ages 3 and under are free.

The park features two water slides, a bowl slide, a slow moving lazy river course, a lap pool complete with a diving board and a large area for the youngest of the water-splashers.

Rennie stresses the park is also available for private swim parties, including the use of a room in the recreation center next to the water park custom made for birthday parties.
