Teen’s logo idea chosen — The slightest of smiles flashed on Madison Gaines’ face when she learned her logo design would go on T-shirts and just about any items meant to promote Garvin County’s fair this fall.

Gaines is a 16-year-old who will be a junior at Stratford High School when the new school year begins.

It was her design chosen as the new logo to represent this year’s Garvin County Free Fair and Horse Show set for early September.

For Madison, a member of the Stratford 4-H chapter, her design was all about getting in as many fair related items as possible.

“I knew I had to put the county in there somehow and then put all the things that have to do with the county show, including a horse because of the horse show,” Gaines said.

Just this week Madison and her mom came to Pauls Valley to pick up her winnings, a $300 check provided by the PV National Bank as an incentive to get more students involved in the contest.

Tracie Mullendore, who serves as the county’s 4-H program assistant, calls it a “very encouraging project” as this spring 4-H and FFA students in the county were invited to participate in the logo contest.

“We did not get a whole lot of responses, but the ones we got, they were excellent,” Mullendore said.

“There was a lot of thought and talent put into them.”

Mullendore has said the idea for a logo contest of this kind, something brand new for the fair, came from Randy McGee, a member of the Garvin County Fair Board.

The general idea behind the concept is to start bringing in new and fresh ideas as a way of improving the county fair and horse show held each and every year at the county fairgrounds and rodeo arena in Pauls Valley.

Now that a logo design has been chosen it will be used to promote the local events.

“This logo will be used with anything connected to the Garvin County Free Fair and Horse Show,” Mullendore said.

The new design will go on T-shirts and promotional materials, such as the fair catalog used to print rules and more specific information about the fair.

This year’s big fair is actually scheduled for Sept. 4-6

As for Gaines, this was not the first artistic rodeo for the Stratford teenager.

“She’s already been published with a children’s book,” Mullendore said. “She did the art work for the book.”

Gaines is indeed set to do the art for a series of kids’ books being written by her own aunt.

The teen offered up yet another smile when told she will get the chance to submit even more logo ideas later.

That’s because plans are in place to hold this very same contest every year for 4-H and FFA students in the county.
