Special march all about unity

bporterfield@pvdemocrat.com — Bringing a community and all people together is what a special three-day event is all about in Wynnewood.

To celebrate the upcoming Martin Luther King Jr. holiday a Wynnewood minister and city officials are putting on a celebration complete with fellowship and even a little marching on local streets.

The MLK “celebratory experience” will consist of a variety of events starting this weekend.

All of it is an idea hatched by Rev. Jokori Taylor, who pastors at Hopewell Church.

Taylor uses a single word to describe this first ever series of events coming to Wynnewood.

“Unity,” Taylor said. “That’s the whole thing behind it.

“With Martin Luther King Jr.’s ‘I have a Dream’ speech it’s about unity,” he said.

“With the event instead of focusing on the dream, we’re celebrating being the dream.”

It all gets started when Taylor’s church sponsors the first couple of days of the overall event.

A banquet and “diversity” church service will lead things off.

The banquet is set to begin at 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18 at the Wynnewood Senior Citizens Community Center.

Rev. Mary Ann Finley, former assistant pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, Ga., is scheduled to be the guest speaker.

Musical selections will come from evangelist Aquanetta Wilson and praise dances from the youth of Greater Shiloh Baptist Church in Oklahoma City.

The special church service is set for a 2:30 p.m. start on Sunday, Jan. 19 at the same Wynnewood center.

Guest speaker is Dr. A.J. Ezell, pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Fort Worth, Texas and vice president of the Texas State Baptist Convention.

Togetherness is the theme of the event’s finale as the public is invited to participate or just come out and watch a parade in downtown Wynnewood.

The parade is set to get marching at noon, capped off by a downtown celebration at 1 p.m.

Set to speak here is Wynnewood alum Scott Rowland, who is currently the first assistant district attorney in Oklahoma County.

“With the unity parade we want it to be as multi-cultural as possible,” Taylor said.

He invites anyone interested in taking part in the parade to give him a call in advance at 405-538-7626.

The Wynnewood minister is quick to add his idea of organizing this event was quickly supported by the city of Wynnewood.

“I wrote a proposal to the city for the parade and downtown celebration for the Martin Luther King holiday and they accepted it,” he said.

  • ‘Rio 2’ average effort, but still a family win

Though Hollywood will never truly abandon milking characters for franchises well past the expiration date, I will say that even the most mediocre series seems to be getting at least more tolerable than in the past.
