Law change is unlikely

NORMAN — Some of the hype over this weekend’s Super Bowl will descend into the origins of the two teams and their states’ decision to allow recreational marijuana use.

Some have referred to the game as the “Stoner Bowl” in honor of Washington and Colorado’s loosening of marijuana laws.

Don’t look for similar drug policy changes in Oklahoma. Sen. Connie Johnson, D-Oklahoma City, has once again sponsored legislation that would regulate and tax marijuana like alcohol.

Senate Bill 2116 would make the personal use, possession and limited home-cultivation of marijuana legal for adults 21 years of age and older.

The Senate Appropriations Committee on Select Agencies will have a hearing Feb. 12 to discuss the science of medical marijuana. Johnson formerly sponsored medical marijuana bills that never got a hearing.

State drug agencies have said they will fight any attempt to legalize marijuana use, medical or otherwise. A poll sponsored by Oklahoma NORML says 71 percent of Sooners favor amending state laws to allow for physician-authorized patients to consume cannabis for therapeutic purposes.

Twenty states and the District of Columbia have laws allowing medical use of marijuana. Colorado and Washington have eliminated criminal and civil penalties for possessing small quantities of marijuana by adults.

  • ‘Rio 2’ average effort, but still a family win

Though Hollywood will never truly abandon milking characters for franchises well past the expiration date, I will say that even the most mediocre series seems to be getting at least more tolerable than in the past.
