Max M. Marquardt

Pauls Valley, Oklahoma — Max Marquardt, 78, of Norman, Okla., passed away Friday, Feb. 7, 2014. Max was born Sept. 8, 1935 in El Reno, Okla.

Upon graduation from college at Central State University, and at the ripe old age of 21, Max became the youngest head coach in Oklahoma when he accepted the head basketball coaching position at Pauls Valley, where he coached for four years.

He then coached at Pawhuska before spending 20 years as a coaching icon at Norman, where he made the Tigers a state tournament regular in the early to mid ‘70s and won the 1970 state basketball championship. He retired from coaching in 1984.

A celebration of life service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 13 at Journey Church, 3801 Journey Parkway, in Norman.
