Controversial call costs Panthers

marie@pvdemocrat.com — Pauls Valley squandered away a great chance at a district championship Friday night at the Panther Gymnasium.

A struggling Elgin team overcame a double digit deficit to escape with a 67-66 win on a controversial technical foul at the end of the game.

After jumping up and grabbing the rim, Treston Williams was given a technical foul with .04 seconds remaining in the game. Elgin’s Jordan Rodgers hit two free throws to give Elgin the lead and the win.

Pauls Valley jumped out of the gate quickly with a double digit lead. After the first initial run by PV, Elgin settled in and made a game of it.

The Owls slowly chipped away at the lead and took their first lead of the game on a three pointer to start the second half.

The game went back-and-forth from there as PV would build a slight lead and Elgin would come back to retake the lead.

Williams hits some big baskets early and finished with a team high 19 points. Carter Tate had to leave in the third quarter with an injury to his knee returned in the fourth with five big points and three assists to keep the Panthers in the game.

A Matt Perry three pointer with two minutes to play gave PV a 67-63. Rodgers answered on the other end with a three to cut the lead to one. After a turnover, Elgin got the ball back looking for one shot..

Elgin got the shot and then a couple of extra after the technical that gave them the win.

Balcerak had another double-double for PV with 13 points and 14 boards. Tate finished with 10, Nation 9, Perry 7, Readnour 6 and Butts 3.

  • ‘Rio 2’ average effort, but still a family win

Though Hollywood will never truly abandon milking characters for franchises well past the expiration date, I will say that even the most mediocre series seems to be getting at least more tolerable than in the past.
