Chuck wagon event offers fellowship

bporterfield@pvdemocrat.com — As the calls for assistance can often outstrip any charity’s ability to serve as much as they’d like within the community, the ultimate acts of kindness are always possible when those who also call it home step in to fill the need.

Hoping to help answer such a necessity is the Pauls Valley Ministerial Alliance, with a plan to help out the PV Samaritans food pantry and local Salvation Army by hosting an afternoon of entertaining fellowship Saturday, April 20.

Called the Country Gospel Singing and Chuck Wagon Food event, it is all set to be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Wacker Park band shell, where both spiritual and the other kind of hunger can be nourished.

“Every year their budget gets stretched… If everybody helps a little bit, it will help the larger picture,” said First Church of God Pastor Terry Clayton. “We just need to come together and help them.”

Clayton noted how the idea was a little more than a year in the making when discussion reminisced how the Alliance used to take a collective offering for charities here in Garvin County and how it needed to be done again, but with a creative way to get involved with residents. That’s when the idea for a chuck wagon themed gathering was suggested and felt like the perfect fit for people here.

The fun, complete with a chuck wagon via a member of the Christian Life Church brings the grub from beans, chili and cornbread and it will be the First Church of God’s membership providing a harmony edge through invitation of a country gospel group, said Clayton. The event itself is free and all that is asked is that people donate what they can for what he sees as a great way to lead into summer.

“This will be something new for us,” said Clayton, adding how those attending will need to bring their own lawn chairs. “We’re hoping the turnout will be great and if so we can do it again next year.”

In case of inclement weather, a secondary location for the event would be at the Christian Life Church at 820 South Walnut.

Up next for the Ministerial Alliance after that will be the National Day of Prayer on Thursday, May 2 at the Garvin County Courthouse lawn.
