Grimmett leads PV to win

marie@pvdemocrat.com — The Pauls Valley Lady Panthers overcame a five-point halftime deficit and rallied for a 39-34 win over rival Purcell Tuesday night in Purcell.

Abigail Grimmett was 10-of-10 from the line including 6-of-6 in the fourth quarter to help lead the Lady Panthers to their third straight win.

The Lady Panthers used their defensive pressure in the second half to turn the game around and pull out the win.

Pauls Valley took an early lead on Kallie McMahan’s basket. The Lady Panthers would then go cold and Purcell would finish out the quarter with a 7-2 run for a 7-4 lead.

Purcell increased their lead to 7 early in the second quarter as Mixon hit a big three pointer. McMahan’s traditional three-point play cut the lead to four.

The game went back-and-forth over the final three minutes and Lathen’s three pointer at the buzzer gave Purcell at 5-point half time lead.

The official score keeper had Purcell leading by only three 19-16 but the Lady Panther book had the right score and corrected the officials giving Purcell a 20-15 lead.

The game was slow in the third quarter as neither team wanted to take control. Late in the quarter PV went on a 6-1 run as McMahan hit a three pointer late to tie the score at 23.

The offense picked up in the fourth and Purcell jumped out to a 29-27 lead. PV then hit six straight points with A. Grimmett scoring four and giving PV the lead for good.

Purcell cut the lead to one but four straight free throws in the final 40 seconds pushed the Lady Panther lead and win to 5 points.

Pauls Valley will continue their road trip Friday as they travel to Bethany Friday night.
