Unicycle fun one more time

bporterfield@pvdemocrat.com — A class teaching kids and adults alike how to ride a unicycle is about to make a second go around here in Pauls Valley.

The free class led by veteran unicycle rider Rodney Cozens first rode into the local Reynolds Recreation Center last year.

It proved so popular Cozens is planning a second season of the unicycle fun starting with the first class from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, April 27 at the very same recreation center.

Enrollment of students kick things off followed by the first of many classes expected to stretch throughout the entire year.

Cozens will be the first to admit last year’s turnout of students was way above the handful he expected.

“It exceeded my expectations last year,” Cozens said. “I taught about 60 kids and some adults how to ride a unicycle.

“We had a handful who stuck with us all year long,” he said. “There were others who would come and go.

“We even had some people come from Moore and Edmond. They were adults who knew how to ride. They looked us up on the Internet and came down for a few classes.

“I’m looking forward to teaching even more this year. I want it to become an even bigger deal.”

Just like last year the weekly class is free and aims for ages 7 and up.

Not only is there no charge for the class but it’s also free for just about everything else.

“We provide safety gear, unicycles and the training,” Cozens said.

Another expectation for Cozens was last year’s first series of classes would mostly draw only the interest of boys.

His surprise came when plenty of girls came out to learn how to ride a unicycle.

Cozens himself learned how to ride a unicycle when he was 13 years old living in Sacramento, Calif.

It was something he put to good use when he once attended a school to learn how to be a circus clown.

He also learned it was something he could do to get around town in a fast and unique way.

“Once I learned I thought it was the coolest thing. It’s a good way to get around. It’s just a blast,” he said.

With so much experience Cozens says he has proven methods to teach others how to ride a unicycle.

He also stresses that riding a unicycle is far less dangerous than many may think.

Once this second round of classes begin this weekend they will be held weekly on Sunday afternoons at the recreation center.

The plan is to meet all year long with it all concluding as unicycle riders take to the streets for Pauls Valley’s Christmas parade this December.

“I want to give thanks to the recreation center for allowing us to use that facility,” Cozens said.

“That’s a big thing for us, being a part of that building and Pauls Valley. I just want them to understand how much I appreciate it.”
