Political races set as filings end

bporterfield@pvdemocrat.com — A series of political races at various levels, including some here in Garvin County, are now set as a three-day filing period ended Friday.

Two Garvin County officials, Treasurer Sandy Goggans and Assessor Beverly Strickland, earned new four-year terms without opposition.

The story was much different for two Garvin County commissioners as both Johnny Mann in District 3 and Stan Spivey in District 1 drew opponents.

Looking to challenge Mann, a longtime commissioner, is fellow Democrat Mike DeArman of Paoli. For now that election is set for the primary vote on June 24.

Another election looks to come during the general election in November as Spivey is set to go against Jarod Work. Both are from Lindsay.

Spivey is going after his first full term as he won an election a couple of years ago to serve out the term of the retired Kenneth Holden. In that election Work was also one of the candidates seeking the office.

As for Goggans and Strickland, it was all smiles as no opposition filed to run against either one by the 5 p.m. deadline Friday.

“I’m just happy,” Goggans said.

“I enjoy my work. I enjoy serving; it’s pretty rewarding.”

Goggans has been Garvin County’s treasurer since 2002.

“I’m excited to be the assessor for another four years,” Strickland said. “I’m excited of all the challenges were going to have.

“I enjoy working with the public; working with people one-on-one and answering their questions and helping them any way I can.”

Strickland has been in the assessor’s office since 2009.

A couple of other area races now look to be on the election schedule later this year.

Current Garvin County Associate District Judge Steve Kendall, appointed to the office last year, is set to go against local attorney Kristin Jarman in June.

The district attorney overseeing the Garvin County area also has a challenge.

Greg Mashburn, a Republican from Norman, drew a Democrat challenger, Mike Millstead of Norman. That race should be on the November ballot.

This district attorney’s office covers Garvin, McClain and Cleveland counties.

District Judge Greg Dixon, serving in Garvin County, won a new term without opposition.

A couple of state representatives covering parts of Garvin County also won new terms.

Lisa Billy, R-Lindsay, of District 42 and Charles McCall, R-Atoka, of District 22 did not have opponents.

Another filing set for next week is for candidates looking to serve out a three-year unexpired term on the Stratford Town Council.

This filing period is from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily Monday through Wednesday, April 14-16 at the Election Board office in PV.
