PV falls in extra innings

marie@pvdemocrat.com — The Pauls Valley Panthers rallied from 4 runs down in the 10th inning, with three runs but couldn’t get the tying or winning run across in a 9-8 loss to Marietta.

Drake O’Bryant pitched 9 and 2/3 solid innings. He gave up 9 runs, only 4 earned, while striking out 8 and walking two.

O’Bryant couldn’t quite finish the game and gave away to Eddie Johnson who got the final Marietta out.

The damage was done as Marietta rallied with two outs for four runs in the 10th as they batted around to take a 9-5 lead.

The Panthers rallied as Matt Perry and Tyler Butts both walked to start the inning. Drake O’Bryant singled to load the bases. Perry scored on a passed ball and Butts scored on a second passed ball.

Tanner Hamilton walked to put runners on first and third. Treston Williams fly ball scored O’Bryant and Hamilton moved to second.

Marietta pulled off a little league play to get Hamilton at second. The pitcher faked a throw to second and the shortstop and second basemen both dived and acted like the ball got by them. As everyone raced to look for the ball, Hamilton took off and the pitcher came over and tagged him out.

Marietta got out of the inning with a fly ball and a 9-8 win.

The Panthers had a chance to win the game before going into extra innings. They had the bases loaded in the seventh and got the tying run across. Still with no one out, the Panthers squandered that opportunity and the game went into extra innings.

The Panthers had the early lead as Hamilton scored in the first inning after a double and a passed ball.

Marietta tied the game in the third but PV regained the lead with two runs in the bottom half of the inning.

O’Bryant reached on an error and Hamilton was hit with a pitch to start the inning. Williams loaded the bases with a single. O’Bryant scored on a fielder’s choice and Hamilton scored on an error giving PV a 3-1 lead.

Marietta cut the Panther lead to one with a run in the top of the fourth but PV got the run back in the fifth.

Hamilton reached on an error. He moved to second on Williams hit and scored on a ground out by David Flores.

Marietta took the lead in the sixth with three runs.

Pauls Valley tied the game in the seventh with a run but left the bases loaded with no body out.

Pauls Valley had a chance to win the game in the ninth as Hamilton singled to start the inning. He moved around to third on a couple of errors. With nobody out, Hamilton was out at home on a missed squeeze play squandering that opportunity.

The Panthers will look to get back on the winning track at home with Purcell Monday.
