Jonah S. Roberts Jr.

Pauls Valley, Oklahoma — Jonah S. Roberts Jr. of Pauls Valley passed away April 29, 2014 in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma at the age of 89 years.

He was born July 17, 1924 in Ranger, Texas to Dollie Cordelia (Hayes) and Jonah S. Roberts Sr.

Jonah served in World War II where he earned the rank of Staff Sergeant and went on to earn World War II Victory Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Ribbon and the EAME (European-African-Middle Eastern) Theater Ribbon and the Rifle Marksman qualification.

He and Mary Jo Sanders were married in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma on August 4, 1945.

He worked in various furniture and department stores including Jackson’s, J.C. Bull, as well as Williamson’s. In 1972 he opened Roberts Furniture; he owned and operated the furniture store until retiring in 1988. Jonah was also an avid O.U. fan and has made Pauls Valley his home almost all of his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary Jo Sanders Roberts; one brother, Wayne Roberts; and three sisters: Juanita Chapman, Edna McGee and Kathryn Fitzgerald.

Surviving family include his son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Emma Roberts of Pauls Valley; two grandsons: John Roberts and his fiancé Lynn of Edmond, and Jay Roberts and his wife Andrea of Chickasha; one great-grandson, Tyler Roberts, two great-granddaughters, Abby Roberts and Raylee Roberts; a brother-in-law, Loyd Sanders and his wife Dorothy of Midland, Texas; two sisters-in-law: Ginny Gilbert and her husband Phil of Humble, Texas, and Barbara Roberts; as well as a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 1, 2014 at 2 p.m. at the Stufflebean-Coffey Chapel of Remembrance officiated by Dr. Joe Elam. Interment will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
