ALDI opens Norman store on West Main Street

Store one of more than 1,300 in U.S.

Norman, Oklahoma — A light rain didn’t deter dozens of shoppers who showed up to help open the ALDI store at 2440 W. Main Street in Norman early Thursday.

The store held a ribbon cutting earlier in the week but the Thursday morning opening was the first time for shoppers to make their way into the west Norman store.

Scott Huska, vice president of Aldi’s Denton division, and Chris Daniels, director of operations, and others welcomed shoppers with coupons and other items.

The company operates about 1,300 stores in 32 states. Over the last several years, ALDI has opened an average of 80 stores each year.

Huska acknowledged Norman’s a tough grocery market.

“It’s a tough market all over the United States,” he said. “But we’ve been doing what we do for 38 years and what we’ve found is we’re a great fit for smart consumers.”

The store employs between 15 to 20 workers, most of whom receive full medical and other benefits. He said their goal is to pay better and retain good workers.

“We are pleased to bring our first store to Norman to help customers get high-quality products at everyday low prices,” said Huska. “We challenge shoppers to switch from national brands to our high-quality exclusive brands and save up to 50 percent without compromising. As important as price is, the only way to attract and keep shoppers is to have quality products.”

The stores are open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and include a smaller store footprint, open carton displays and encouragement of customers to bring their own shopping bags. The Norman store features high ceilings, natural lighting and environmentally friendly building materials.
