Officials still look at fatality wreck

bporterfield@pvdemocrat.com — State authorities are still taking a close look at what caused a semi truck and trailer to veer off a Pauls Valley area highway resulting in a collision and one death last week.

Officials with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol have announced troopers plan to spend the next few weeks conducting witness interviews and completing a technical investigation into the exact cause of the collision.

During the early morning hours of Thursday, July 3 the large truck driven by Bruce Hartman, 44, of Oklahoma City was traveling southbound on Interstate 35.

At the same time another semi truck and trailer, driven by David Baird, 58, of Eufaula, was legally parked on the southbound shoulder of I-35.

Troopers have reported it remains unknown what caused the truck driven by Hartman to go off the road and onto the highway’s shoulder.

At around 7 a.m. Thursday it struck the rear of the truck and trailer parked at a site near Pauls Valley’s main I-35 exit and entrance.

Hartman was reported to be wearing seat belts at the time. His condition prior to the collision remains unknown as the official cause of the accident is listed as “pending investigation.”

Hartman was taken by a Pauls Valley E.M.S. ambulance to PV General Hospital. He was pronounced dead from undisclosed injuries sustained in the collision.

Baird was not hurt in the accident.

OHP Trooper Daniel Arms of the Murray County Detachment reported the next four to six weeks troopers will continue an investigation, which is expected to include the pre-trip events of the driver.

“Once toxicology results are received an investigative report will be sent to the district attorney for their review to determine what, if any, criminal charges should be filed,” the report stated.

Assisting Arms at the accident scene last week were Trooper Heath Green of the Garvin County Detachment, Trooper Kenneth Duncan of Troop F’s vehicle crimes investigation, Trooper Shelby Humphrey of the Size and Weights Division, Garvin County deputies and Pauls Valley firefighters.
