Delta group has big birthday — A community organization serving the Garvin County area is having a pretty big birthday, so it’s inviting the public to a get-together to celebrate.
Community Action agencies all across the country are commemorating the 50th anniversary of service to the public.
Nationally, the Community Action Partnership will honor the occasion during its annual convention Aug. 19-22 in Washington, D.C.
Locally, it’s an open house next week at the Lindsay office of Delta Community Action.
“Community Action agencies are celebrating 50 years,” said Karen Nichols, executive director of the service covering Garvin, McClain and Stephens counties.
“It’s our anniversary, so we thought we would have a celebration and invite the community,” she said.
“We’ll celebrate by having displays set up for each of our programs.”
Those programs include Head Start, housing and emergency services, senior nutrition and public transportation.
The local come-and-go open house is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, July 18 at Delta’s administrative offices located at 308 S.W. 2nd in Lindsay.
Those dropping by will be treated to hot dogs and homemade ice cream.
Also a handful of volunteers are expected to be formally recognized for the service they’ve given.
Nichols added various folks from Pauls Valley and throughout the three-county district have been invited to attend the open house.
It was Lyndon B. Johnson who signed the Economic Opportunity Act (EOA) back on Aug. 20, 1964.
The EOA created a variety of programs, including Community Action agencies, as part of his War on Poverty.
Delta Community Action was one of those agencies established to address local poverty problems in rural, urban and suburban communities across the country.
In 1965, a group of citizens interested in social issues started conducting county-wide meetings in McClain County.
Then on April 4, 1966, the McClain County Community Action Foundation was incorporated.
The young foundation grew to become what is known today as Delta Community Action Foundation.
Delta CAF sponsors programs like Head Start/Early Head Start, foster grandparents, housing/weatherization, senior nutrition and public transit.
Delta also assists communities with emergency services programs located in each county office.
Delta CAF provided 849 households with food or food purchase vouchers in 2013 alone.
More than 230 homes received clothing assistance while 248 families were given utility assistance.
“Delta Community Action’s track record highlights the positive impact we’ve had helping our neighbors through a variety of financial and personal challenges,” Nichols added.
