Water park hopes for July opening

bporterfield@pvdemocrat.com — The target date for the official opening of Pauls Valley’s long anticipated water park is for now early July.

Members of a pool committee met on Monday to look over their recommendations on details, like hours of operation and admission prices, for the outdoor aquatic center now being built as the second phase of the Reynolds Recreation Center.

For the moment the hope is the park can open for business during this summer’s July 4th week.

“Opening day is still be determined, but crossing our fingers we hope sometime in July,” said committee member Jennifer Samford.

Samford and others at the meeting, such as PV City Manager James Frizell, agree the real factor in the park’s opening is when crews can actually complete their work on each aspect of the facility.

“Rain and construction schedule is what will determine when we open,” Frizell said about the water park.

The construction is indeed the big factor as Frizell said the park’s plumbing work is currently behind schedule.

Frizell added the rain showers that do pass through the area do slow the work on the park, which could delay its opening.

The city manager did say the drought like conditions will likely have no impact on the park’s opening.

Pauls Valley’s aquatic supervisor, Billy Tomlinson, said he looked at similar water park facilities to come up with recommended hours and prices.

The committee recommends the hours to be noon to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Overall the park would open on Memorial Day weekend during a full season and continue through the Labor Day holiday. Hours would switch to weekends only in mid-August.

As for the park itself, it will have a capacity of 400 visitors.

Recommended fees for park visitors are $7 for adults, $5 for seniors and $4 for youth ages 4 to 14. Children 3 and under are free.

The park will use punch card passes this year and possibly move to regular season passes in 2014.

Tomlinson added his work is moving forward to get enough certified lifeguards before the pool opens.

“To run this facility safely I would need about 16 to 20 guards per shift,” Tomlinson said.

The group will present recommendations for the park at the next city council meeting on Tuesday night, May 14.

  • ‘Rio 2’ average effort, but still a family win

Though Hollywood will never truly abandon milking characters for franchises well past the expiration date, I will say that even the most mediocre series seems to be getting at least more tolerable than in the past.
