New ice rink open for skaters

Pauls Valley, Oklahoma — The time has arrived for the brand new holiday feature in Pauls Valley.

Friday, Nov. 29 was the day when an old fashioned ice skating rink opened for business in the local train depot area.

Complete with artificial ice, the rink is scheduled to be open daily through Dec. 29.

 Daily times are from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 5:30 to 10 p.m. Friday, 1 to 10 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

The city rink is 37 feet by 52 feet in size and can comfortably fit 55 skaters at one time. The cost to skate is $8, which includes the skates.

Also a part of the rink is a fundraising opportunity for non-profit organizations.

Those groups working the gates and taking tickets at the rink get a portion of the proceeds for that one night.

If they choose to work the rink’s concession stand they get 100 percent of the proceeds.

Then when Monday, Dec. 2 rolls around it’s truly time for the next holiday.

It will officially be Christmas time as at 7 p.m. that night the annual Parade of Lights starts to make its way around the customary route through downtown Pauls Valley.

Before the parade the PV Fire Department will hold a chili supper starting at 5 p.m. at the fire station.

All next week there will also be sign-ups for those interested in receiving a holiday food basket this Christmas from the Pauls Valley Samaritans.

The schedule for the sign-ups to receive a Samaritan Christmas basket is:

 • Monday, Dec. 2, 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m.

 • Tuesday, Dec. 3, 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m.

 • Wednesday, Dec. 4, 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m.

 • Thursday, Dec. 5, 10 a.m. to noon, 1 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m.

 • Friday, Dec. 6, 1 to 5 p.m.

All the sign-ups will be at the offices of the Pauls Valley Chamber of Commerce, 112 E. Paul.

  • ‘Rio 2’ average effort, but still a family win

Though Hollywood will never truly abandon milking characters for franchises well past the expiration date, I will say that even the most mediocre series seems to be getting at least more tolerable than in the past.
