‘Kick A** 2’ less groundbreaking, but still a silly gore fest

DVD Review

Pauls Valley, Oklahoma — Debates will rage on the impact of violence in media until the last severed limb flies, but until we all live in Pleasantville internment camps, I’m going to enjoy the occasional therapeutic calm that comes with the classic bloodbath action flick. Today’s subject is the sequel to what was a very non-traditional superhero story that won brownie points for how brutal hero-ing could be if costume vigilantes sampled the real world.

This chapter is an expansion of that shock value, though perhaps even less serious (if that’s possible) than the first time around, with a little more goofy fun had with already established characters. In fact, it almost turns into a very raw and dark version of the Justice League, perfectly illustrating how no good intention will prevent our collective dumb nature. “Kick A** 2” may indeed have nothing of redeeming value to offer a society saturated in its own negativity, but is still a clever commentary and escape for those of us in need.

Picking up no more than a few years after the events of the previous carnage, David Lizewski (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) has pretty much retired from crime fighting as Kick A** and along with Mindy Macready/Hit Girl (Chloë Grace Moretz), they are trying their best to just be normal angsty high school students. However, neither seem to be able to give up trying to defeat evil with David invited to join a super hero team called Justice Forever, which was inspired by his actions as the city’s most famous guy in hero gear and Mindy, not at all fitting in with teenage girls more villainous than any one she ever battled.

As Mindy struggles with identity and not being able to better train her vigilante partner, David dives right into working with the other heroes like Colonel Stars and Stripes (Jim Carrey), Night B&*%ch (Lindy Booth) and Doctor Gravity (Donald Faison). It all seems to be going pretty decent for the do-gooders until an old nemesis, Chris D'Amico/The Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) seeks revenge for the death of his father by becoming the Mother F*&#*er and forms a counter league of evil including Genghis Carnage (Tom Wu) and Mother Russia (Olga Kurkulina). It all manages to come together in a cheesy mess so perfect for the B-movie crowd that just begs to mock those who try and point out its flaws.

  • ‘Rio 2’ average effort, but still a family win

Though Hollywood will never truly abandon milking characters for franchises well past the expiration date, I will say that even the most mediocre series seems to be getting at least more tolerable than in the past.
