Wreck comes from ice, speed

Pauls Valley, Oklahoma — A patch of ice on the roadway was not a good mix with speed as an Arizona man was seriously hurt in a one-vehicle accident earlier this week near Pauls Valley.

State troopers concluded it was a vehicle’s unsafe speed on ice or snow that caused a rollover Monday morning, March 3.

The 1999 Chevrolet Blazer was being driven by 41-year-old Anthony Ford of Phoenix, Ariz.

It was also Ford who suffered the worst of the injuries as three others in the vehicle were unhurt, including a teenager and 1-year-old baby.

A report released by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol shows the vehicle was traveling southbound on Interstate 35.

As traffic came upon a portion of the roadway where both lanes were covered with ice the driver lost control of the vehicle.

It was a listed time of 9:18 a.m. Monday when the vehicle went off I-35 at a site about 2 miles north of Paul Valley near the Kimberlin Road exit.

After leaving the roadway to the right the vehicle overturned one half time coming to rest on its top.

Ford, who was reportedly the only person in the vehicle not wearing seat belts at the time, was ejected about 25 feet from the vehicle.

Ford was initially taken by a Pauls Valley E.M.S. ambulance to PV General Hospital.

He was later airlifted to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City, where he was admitted in serious condition with head and trunk internal injuries.

Also taken to the local hospital were all three passengers — Nona Julian, 34, a 17-year-old girl and 1-year-old girl.

All three, also from Phoenix, Ariz., were treated and released.

The report shows the listed cause of the accident is “unsafe speed for ice or snow on roadway.”

Investigating the accident was OHP Trooper Tommy Riddle of the Garvin County Detachment.

Assisting were Trooper Doug Brinson of Murray County and Pauls Valley fire and police officials.
