Sager squeezes PV to victory

marie@pvdemocrat.com — Pauls Valley freshman Nick Sager laid down a perfect suicide squeeze in the seventh inning to finish off a Panther comeback in the Pauls Valley Tournament Saturday.

Sager’s bunt scored Austin Foxworth from third to lead the Panthers to a 7-6 come from behind win and a third place finish in the tournament.

The Panthers trailed Davis 7-2 going into the final two innings.

A two out rally in the sixth cut the lead to a run. Sager got the rally started with a base on balls. Drake O’Bryant then doubled, his fourth hit of the day, scoring Sager from 1st base.

Tanner Hamilton put runners on at the corners as he was hit with a pitch. He stole second and both he and O’Bryant scored on Treston Williams’ doubled.

Tyler Butts came in and pitched the sixth and seventh inning and didn’t give up any runs and kept Pauls Valley close.

In the bottom of the seventh Butts started off the inning by reaching on an error. He stole second and scored on Foxworth’s double off the wall in left center.

Matt Perry followed with a double but Foxworth was held up a third.

Sager then came to the plate and took the signs from coach Stephen Wilkerson. Foxworth took off with the pitch and Sager got a but down between the pitcher and third baseman and Foxworth scored easily giving the Panthers the win.

Davis took the lead with two runs in the top of the first inning.

Pauls Valley left the bases loaded in their half of the first.

A one-out single by Matt Perry got the Panthers going in the second. He stole second and scored on O’Bryant’s two-out single to cut the lead to 2-1.

Davis would score a run in the fourth and add three more in the fifth to take a 6-1 lead.

O’Bryant singled to start the fifth. He moved to third on back-to-back hit by pitches. Butts hit into a fielder’s choice scoring O’Bryant as PV cut the lead to 6-2.

The Panthers would then rally in the final two inning for the win.

O’Bryant finished the game going 4-4 with two runs scored. Williams, Foxworth and Perry all finished with two hits each. Sager and Hamilton rounded of the hits with a pair of singles.

Eddie Johnson pitched five strong innings. He gave up 6 runs, two earned on five hits. He struck out one and walked only one. Butts picked up the win giving up no runs on two hits. He struck out four and didn’t way anyone.

Pauls Valley added a 7-4 win over Comanche on Monday to move to 6-5 on the year.

Prep Team Finish

The Pauls Valley Panther Prep Team finished second in the OK Kids State Tournament losing in the championship game to Weathford 11-9.
