Rodeo, PV team up again

bporterfield@pvdemocrat.com — The action and long tradition of rodeo join forces in a big way as Pauls Valley’s annual summer roundup is now only days away.

This is the 69th year for the Heritage Days Rodeo, which for this time around is Thursday through Saturday, June 26-28.

It all officially gets started at 8 p.m. each night at the Pauls Valley Roundup Club Arena near the local Wacker Park.

Topping off the event is a rodeo parade looping through PV and back to the park starting at 5 p.m. on the last night.

For longtime rodeo supporter Dessie Daugherty the Heritage Days event and Pauls Valley have gone together for decades now with the PV Roundup Club leading the way.

It’s also something that’s a real family affair and close to her heart.

“It’s a great tradition,” Daugherty said. “This rodeo in Pauls Valley has been going on since 1945.

“I was born into this. The first president of the roundup club was my dad.”

In fact, Dessie’s grandmother rode a tractor to help with the dirt work and prepare the site when the local rodeo grounds were first built.

“At one point that was just a gully,” she said about the current rodeo arena site. “It was really rough.”

She also gives a lot of credit to Jerry and Lili Norton for all the recent improvements to the arena during their many years of overseeing the local roundup club.

“They did wonders. They moved mountains as for the current facility we have out there now.”

Also helping with keeping the local rodeo strong is a diverse group of board members who come from all walks of life.

“We have a love of the sport,” Dessie said.

“When it gets in your blood you can’t get it out.”

Each night of PV’s rodeo will start with live music around 7:15 p.m. by the John David Smith and Company Band.

That’s followed at the top of the hour with a whole flurry of events and sights.

A total of eight rodeo events are featured, along with Miss Rodeo USA Elisa Swenson.

Naturally mutton bustin’, junior barrels and calf scrambles will all be there nightly.

Tickets are $8 for adults at the arena gate, $4 for children and it’s half price on Thursday for senior citizens.

(Editor’s Note: More on the Heritage Days Rodeo will be featured in Tuesday’s edition of the PV Democrat.)
