When you are focused on what you do not have, you fail to see what you can have. When you remember all that you have, you realize that God gave you the air you breathe and the food you eat today. God has given us parents, siblings, boyfriends and girlfriends, spouses, and kids.

“As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving. “ (Colossians 2:6-7)

God has been so kind to give you friends, a roof over your head and if you remove your eyes from what is temporary and fix your eyes on what is eternal, you see God has given you His Son, Jesus.

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)

God has given you the hope of eternal life, forgiveness of sins, and the promise to never leave you. God has given you love, peace, and the promise to work all things for the good because you love Him.

God has done all that, and in response, we still complain, “I don’t like my job. My life stinks. Why does that person make more money than me? When will I get to take my vacation? Why do I have to clean all the time? Why am I not playing more? Why do I have to be stuck in this marriage? Why don’t I have more friends? Why won't you heal me? God, you should have done more for me.”

No wonder thankfulness is important to God. No one wants to be around someone that is not thankful or put up with a person that feels they are entitled, but often times, here we are discontent with how things are going in our lives.

“And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.” (Colossians 3:17)

The good news is that you can choose your attitude, and no matter the mood you had yesterday; you can choose to be thankful and happy today.

You can make a decision to stop complaining the second the thought of being unsatisfied is in your head, and you can fix your eyes on all the things God has given you and thank Jesus instead.

As one of God’s chosen people, let today’s devotion fill your life and remember that you represent Jesus in your attitudes and interactions today.

What are five things you can thank God for today?

“Heavenly Father, I have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so I will walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as I have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving. I have so much to be thankful for, and when my mouth is filled with Praise, I will not be a complainer. I will remember that I represent Jesus in my attitudes and my interactions today. I ask for Your Holy Spirit to live big in me today and lead me in the way I need to go. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
