An explosion in a boiler room at the Wynnewood refinery has claimed the life of 34-year old Billy Smith of Pauls Valley, and critically injured Russell Mann of Davis.

Operators were restarting a boiler shortly before 6:30 p.m. on Friday when the explosion occurred.

The boiler had been temporarily shut down as part of the refinery's turnaround process, a 40-day shutdown period scheduled when workers refurbish and repair refinery equipment.

CVR Energy, Inc. launched an an immediate investigation into the cause of the explosion.

“I would like to express my deepest sympathy for the employees and families affected by this tragedy,” said Jack Lipinski, CVR Energy chief executive officer. “We are conducting a thorough investigation of the incident and cooperating fully with OSHA and the Oklahoma Department of Labor.

"Our focus is to determine how this accident occurred and what steps must be taken to avoid a repeat of this incident. We remain committed to providing a safe working environment for our employees and contractors,” he said.
