Zombie Days

Becoming the undead is quite has become holiday trend and one Pauls Valley resident, Grant Gish, with the help of Main Street Pauls Valley Director Samantha Robb, decided to get into the spirit Friday for a Halloween party. Downtown will be covered with flesh eaters all day today for the Living Dead Center Festival, starting with the Zombie 5K run at 9 a.m.

As the dead have risen for Main Street Pauls Valley’s first ever Living Dead Center Festival, one very popular attraction returning today is their zombie flash mob dance.

Behind the grisly scene so to speak has been Dance Station owner Devyn Butts, who has spent the past several weeks helping to prepare the ghoulish crew for two spooky performances.

Though one will just have to be downtown when the music begins to catch the choreographed action, it’s promised to carry the same entertainment value that helped it inspire creation of all the day’s activities.

“It’s just fun, to get little kids all the way up to adults,” said Butts, who has lived in Pauls Valley for 18 years and has been teaching dance for 15.

“It’s something unique, something different.”

For the second year in the row Butts has enjoyed getting a different crop of students than her usual pre-school or elementary age students, helping teach what has been one of three nights per week. Some of the students she’s most enjoyed working with have been those who might never be seen dancing in public like older adults.

“I get to see something people are not normally comfortable to do,” said Butts, also giving credit to Main Street director Samantha Robb. “I appreciate Samantha putting this together.”

Set to be included in the performance today and a return to Boo on the Bricks on Wednesday, Oct. 31, there will be the familiar thriller dance and a second unannounced song, said Butts. Despite having to hear the former more than a few times she has not tired of it yet and plans on being involved well into the future.

When the dance starts, Butts won’t be among the zombified, but will instead stand back and watch her work.

She did not get to see her daughter the first time last year and will be involved in other activities the rest of the day.

“I’d like to watch my daughter this year,” said Butts. “Step back this time.”

Also mixed in with the rest of today’s activities is a Zombie 5K Run starting downtown at 9 a.m., a Zombie Walk for Cystic Fibrosis at 10 a.m., the Pauls Valley Arts Council Monster Art and Glow Show from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at the downtown Arts and Cultural Center, coffin cruise soap box races at 1 p.m., an undead fashion show there starting at 6 p.m., a Monsters Ball and Zombie Prom at 8 p.m. and an interactive showing of the Rocky Horror Picture show at midnight.
