Things look a little different this year for Lee Elementary with several new teachers and a new administrator, but we are off to a great start!
Students are greeted at their classroom doors every day by their teachers with a handshake, and they begin the day by sharing “Good Things,” which sets the tone for positive learning experiences.
Each class had the opportunity to build a contract for what they feel are important attributes for their learning environment; they all agreed on a set of expectations and are working together to make their classrooms and their school the best place it can be.
Students have been participating in many educational, fun learning activities in their classes.
In science, students are learning about scientific method and measurement, surface tension, designing boats that will stay afloat when carrying cargo (pennies), problem solving with Geoboard challenges.
The fourth grade math classes have been immersed in engineering and problem solving by constructing towers out of spaghetti and marshmallows, and discovering how to save Fred (a candy worm) from “drowning” using paperclips, Gummy Savers, and their problem solving abilities.
Music students are learning how to vocalize and use correct posture, preparing for their upcoming programs, and the fourth grade music classes kicked off the year sharing their talents with a talent show.
In reading, students are exploring genre and theme and learning the speaking parts in a play that is centered on a fairy tale.
This year, we have added an elective called Panther Prep, in which students have opportunities to learn about diverse subjects.
In the class rotations, students are learning sign language, healthy living skills, and financial literacy.
They are delving into STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) and enhancing their reading fluency and speaking aptitude through Reader’s Theaters.
Our 2018-2019 Academic Team, comprised of 5th and 6th grade students, are Amari English, Isaac Green, Blake Peacock, Jorge Quinonez, Ellason Rennie, Keagan Scott, Katie Barahona, Ashton Jones, Ramon Kennedy, Payton Peacock, Kylan Spencer and Lynna Tomlinson.
This team of academic high-flyers are spending time each week preparing for their upcoming competitions, and we are looking forward to a successful year for this group and all of our Lee Elementary students throughout this school year.
We want to extend a big Thank You to Love PV for providing us with school supplies, Tuffy Wigley and friends for building new benches out front, and to our parents and community members for helping us get this year off to a great start!
