With the non-district schedule the Maysville Warriors faced at the start of the season, many didn’t feel they would be in the position they are in. The Warriors find themselves at 3-0 on the year with big wins over highly touted Wynnewood and Stratford.

“We have played three Garvin County schools and have three wins,” head coach Brad O’Steen said.

“Our kids are saying they are Garvin County champs and I guess we are as far as Class A is concerned.”

Last week’s win over Stratford was a big one for the Warriors.

“Heck of a football game,” O’Steen said. “Fans were going crazy and the kids were going crazy. This was a big win for us.”

The good start will be momentum for the Warriors as they start district play on the road this week at Wayne.

The Bulldogs are 3-17 over the last two seasons and are struggling again this year with an 0-3 record.

This young squad is looking to turn things around in district action. The Bulldogs have some experience but they are still young with a majority of juniors and sophomores filling starting positions.

The Bulldogs have been plagued wth injuries. They lost their starting quarterback and several other key players on this squad.

“Don’t really know what they are going to show on offense with the injury situation” O’Steen said. “They’ve shown a lot of different formations and schemes. They’ve shown a little bit of everything.”

Despite their record, the Wayne defense has played really well at times. They trailed highly touted Rush Springs by only 14 points at the half before getting blown out last week.

District is a different season and coach O’Steen knows all to well the importance of getting off on the right foot in district play.

“I don’t care who you are, OU or even Dallas, any night you can get beat,” O’Steen said. “We’re in the top 10 in one poll and now we’ve become the team that everyone is looking to knock off.

“We have to be ready to play Friday night, if we want the first district win, because Wayne is going to gives us its best game of the year.”

Game time is at 7:30 at Bulldog Stadium in Wayne.
