With a 1-2 record in district play, the playoffs are still in the sights of the Pauls Valley Panthers with three game remaining in the regular season.
The task at hand is to win two of those three game but especially this week against Lone Grove and next week against Sulphur.
“This is our playoff week,” Pauls Valley head coach Kevin Foster said. “If we want to make the playoffs we have to beat Lone Grove.”
The Longhorns are 0-3 in district play and 2-5 overall. They have struggled at time but have also played well at times.
“They are in the same situation we are,” Foster said. “They play well but have given up some big plays.”
Lone Grove is playing their second straight game on a Thursday night. They played Plainview last week on Thursday night just because and are playing this week on Thursday like most of the teams in the state because of Fall Break.
Last week Lone Grove played Plainview tough before dropping a 37-23 decision.
The Horns have several good skill position players including quarterback Jacob McClennahan, tailback Dalton Keeton and receiver Calvin Helmers.
“They have a really good quarterback, tailback and receiver,” Foster said. “We will have to contain them all night.”
McClennahan is a dual threat quarterback who had 74 yards passing last week and 38 yards rushing. Keeton had 111 yards against Plainview and had an 88-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
The Pauls Valley defense will face an offense that will show them multiple looks.
“They get in several different formations to run the same thing,” Foster said. “They run the zone, stretch, and counter from each of the formations.”
The Panther offense had their most impressive day through the air last week. Joe Kyle Foster had over 300 yards passing and Dylan Norman had 227 yards receiving. That offense will face a Longhorn 3-4 and sometimes 5-0 defense.
“They are not as big on defense as they have been,” Foster said, “but they have good speed.”
The Panthers have been working hard this week because of one less day of preparation.
PV and LG will kick off at Longhorn Field at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.
